First time buyers bucking the trend in Shropshire
With the average age of first time buyers in the UK currently being 33, these twenty-somethings in Shropshire are defying the odds by securing their first home at Countryside’s popular Linwood Park development in Shifnal.
First time buyers at only 26 years old, Alex Dodd and Olivia Cross are the latest young professionals to move into the Stanton Road development using the government’s Help to Buy scheme which allows buyers to purchase a new home with just a 5% deposit and a 75% mortgage. The remaining 20% is covered by an equity loan from the government, which is interest free for the first five years.
Alex, a Digital Marketing Executive, commented: “We didn’t really know much about Help to Buy before we started house hunting. We both had a Lifetime ISA, but we weren’t really that aware of Help to Buy and how it worked. However, we were surprised to find that it was quite straightforward! Countryside walked us through it all, which is great as it meant that we could afford more than we thought.
“Without Help to Buy I don’t think we would have been able to afford this particular house. A smaller, older house maybe, but we had already decided that we wanted a new build. Older homes can become quite costly if they need a lot of repairs or updates, so unless you’re able to do the work yourself, or can spend the extra money, then a new build just makes sense.”
The couple are now the proud owners of a three bedroom Ellesmere home. Olivia, a Special Education Teacher, adds: “We picked the Ellesmere as the rooms felt big and we really liked the external look of it as well - it has character. Our favourite feature though is definitely the skylight windows. They’re great! Everyone that’s come to see our new home has commented on them.”
Alex continues: “With Olivia’s parents living just up the road, the location is really ideal for us”.
Adam Daniels, Operations Director at Countryside Partnerships West Midlands, commented: “Help to Buy has been a vital lifeline for young professionals since its inception. Linwood Park in particular has seen many young buyers, like Alex and Olivia, take advantage of the government scheme. We’re happy to see that the development is fast transforming into the close-knit community that we envisioned for the scheme, as more and more buyers collect keys to their new homes.”
